Promoting Sustainability at Ohlone
Race to Zero Waste
As an Ohlone College Student Ambassador, I am building a student-led reuse coalition in partnership with Race to Zero Waste. We have been learning about waste management in Fremont and the greater Bay Area, and why reuse is the best option for a zero waste future. We plan to take this message to fellow students, faculty, administration, and staff in order to educate the on-campus population and garner support for the implementation of reusables.
Ohlone Green
As the Student Sustainability Assistant, I sit on the Editorial staff of the Ohlone Green, the Ohlone College's newsletter for sustainability, covering green stories in the District and everyday tips to help the planet. Our purpose is to highlight and encourage sustainability on campus.
Implementing Reusables
As the Student Sustainability Assistant and with the support of Professor Narender Bansal and R20W, I have been working with Ohlone College District and Fresh and Natural to move away from single-use plates and containers, and instead use sustainable, reusable service-ware. The containers will be scanned/tagged, and will be required to return to a designated location within 7 days. Users will use the app to create an account and will be able to join a reward system to redeem points for various perks.
Ohlone Enviro Club
I started Ohlone Enviro Club, an environmental club to foster a love for the outdoors among the student body, to bring attention to pressing environment policy, and become advocates for a sustainable planet.
The club has organized several coastal cleanups, hand-on volunteering with East Bay Park District and Sabercat Preserve, and several local hikes and kayaking activities.
We’ve also held several educational booths, as well as career conversations with local Park Rangers.
