Trail Maintenance

In the summer of 2023, I spent 3 weeks backpacking the Yosemite Wilderness as part of a Student Conservation Association (SCA) restoration crew. It was far from comfortable; landscaping at 10,000 feet elevation in 100 plus degree heat with a 70 pound pack on my back, with a pack-in/pack-out policy. Over those 3 weeks in 100+ degree heat, I worked on maintaining backcountry trails and removing numerous campfire rings. Forgive the hyperbole, but it was the hardest thing I have ever done. However, it was also my single greatest experience, mostly because it was so hard.

The prior year, the Mariposa Grove wildfires altered our plans, and instead of heading out to Yosemite, our crew worked on clearing trails in the City of Vallejo and in Mendocino State Forest.

I have an appreciation for the mission of SCA - allowing youth to experience the wilderness and promoting stewardship of the environment, and exposing them to the beauty of the America wilderness.
